Manual Handling

As an employer you have a legal duty to prevent work related upper limb disorders (ULD’S) or to stop cases getting worse.

For any repetitive upper limb activity in the workplace:

  • Assess the risks: ULD’s can be caused by any repetitive upper limb activity in the workplace e.g. pipetting, photocopying, carrying parcels or books
  • Reduce the risk: train the individual to ensure the job is done safely, consider: can the job be avoided made easier or reduced, break up the work and involve rest breaks or changes of activity,
  • Great care should be taken returning any individual to work involving repetitive upper limb activity after an episode of upper limb discomfort whether work related or not. Please involve the Occupational Health Service for advice regarding appropriate adaptations. Any individual reporting work-related upper limb pain should be referred to the Occupational Health Service.
