New Employees who may require Registration for Health Surveillance under COSHH

OHS Memo M1/07

March 2007

To: All Administrators of the Science Area

New employees who may require registration for health surveillance and COSHH.

As noted in my memorandum of 28 November 2005, certain staff, or other individuals in the workplace (e.g. students and academic visitors) that have exposure to certain hazardous substances may require health surveillance. Where health surveillance is indicated then it is a legal requirement for it to be undertaken. The Occupational Health Service can provide the health surveillance but registration is a departmental responsibility. In this regard, the Area Safety Officers have been most helpful in undertaking the registration process. However the integrity of the process is dependant on departments informing the ASO’s of new staff (or other individuals) that may need to be considered. I would be grateful if you would liaise with your Area Safety Officer to ensure that there is a robust process for them to know of any new staff or other potentially exposed individuals in the workplace that may need consideration for health surveillance.
