Doors

+ more

Doors to secure labs are coded, and some are very narrow (particularly the doors to the Electron Microscopy suite on Level 1, which is operated via a code and swipe card).  While some doors are heavy, those to the main areas like coffee spaces and Materials teaching labs are fine.  Most corridor doors with need both sides opening to allow a wheelchair through.  The door to the computer room has no visual panel, but is usually left open during building opening hours.  The door to the common room is a large single door with vision panel, and the doors to the Materials teaching labs are double doors with no vision panel.

Accessible Computers

+ more

The computer room is on Level 3.  Exit the lift and take the first door on your right.  Follow the corridor around to the left, and the computer suite is the large room on your left hand side.  There are fixed height desks with moveable office chairs, and it is possible to fit a manual wheelchair comfortably under the desk.  The lighting is quite harsh.

Common Rooms

+ more

The common room is located on level 2, to get there, exit the main lift and take the corridor on your right.  The common room will be halfway down on your right hand side.  If you are coming from the outside walkway from the ETB, you can take the second door on  your right (just past the stairs).  The common room has lots of coffee tables and moveable chairs, as well as benches around the edges of the room, and sells hot drinks and cold food between 8.00-14.00.  The service counter is the standard height and there are some tall drinks chillers, so if you are seated you might not be able to reach everything; the staff are happy to help!  The tables are a good height for people using wheelchairs.

Laboratories

+ more

The Materials teaching lab is on Level 3.  To get there, exit the main lift and take the first corridor on your right.  The two teaching labs are the first two doors on your right hand side.  The dry lab and the wet lab are connected by a central door, but this may be closed when teaching is taking place.  The benches are about the height of a kitchen worktop, and there are no height adjustable lab benches or fume cupboards.  The eyewash and first aid kit are too high up for a person in a wheelchair to reach.

There are two height adjustable desks available in the building.  They are currently in the Materials teaching lab on Level 3.  It would be helpful if you could let staff know in advance if you would like to use it.
