Higher Degrees

In 2015 - 16 Education Committee undertook a review of the University's 'higher degrees'. It received the report of that review at its meeting in week 5 of Trinity Term 2016 and agreed to its recommendations. The key recommendation of the review was that the higher degrees should be retained subject to comprehensive reform of their regulation and administration, and that they should be known going forward as 'higher doctorates' to bring Oxford inline with the sector.

The review panel also recommended that whilst this reform is undertaken the existing Examination Regulations for the higher doctorates be suspended as of June 2016, and as a consequence no new applications would be accepted. This does not affect applications which have already been submitted.

The higher degrees affected are:

  • Doctor of Divinity
  • Doctor of Civil Laws
  • Doctor of Letters
  • Doctor of Science
  • Doctor of Music

The Medical Sciences Division has subsequently also requested to suspend the Doctor of Medicine.

It is intended that an officer level working group including representatives from the divisions, Examinations and Assessments and Education Policy Support will be set up to take forward the recommendations of the review.

The report of the review is provided below:
