FM apprentices gain City & Guilds certification

After more than a year of on-the-job training and assessment, the Facilities Management (FM) apprentices have successfully achieved their Level 2 City & Guilds NVQ qualifications in Facilities Services. The FM team now plan to recruit the next generation of apprentices to follow in their footsteps.

Apprentices gain NVQ qualifications In 2016 the FM team partnered with Witney & Abingdon College to create their own apprenticeship programme. They took on eleven apprentices – nine new recruits and two people who were already working elsewhere in FM. This is the largest cohort that any part of the University has accepted.

In order to train and assess the apprentices, senior FM staff became qualified NVQ City & Guilds assessors. They developed a unique in-house training programme, including an intensive ‘boot camp’ induction period and a buddy scheme to enable the apprentices to benefit from the guidance of more experienced colleagues. In late 2016 this work won recognition in the form of the University’s Apprenticeship Manager’s Special Award.

The apprentice programme has been a great success, with seven of the original nine new recruits now in full time employment within FM. The team are now in the process of recruiting six more apprentices. They should start by late April and will again study for a Level 2 NVQ in Facilities Services.  Meanwhile, four of last year’s cohort are about to take up the opportunity to start work on gaining a Level 3 in Facilities Management Practice.
