Running a Capital Project

The Functional estate consists of over 250 building across 12 sites. It provides approximately 600,000m2 (GIA) of space to support research and teaching activity, and includes museums of international renown. Over the past 10 years it has grown by more than 25%. At any one time, the University has in excess of 80 live major projects (value over 100k) at some stage of design or delivery. The purpose of this guide is to provide a convenient summary of the context and the framework within which University capital building projects are planned and executed and of the process that starts with perception of a need and ends with review of a completed project. It provides information on financial regulations, statutory and regulatory requirements for building works roles and responsibilities of these involved in a project, including committees, Project Sponsor Groups and the project team, and the different stages of a project.
