Award winning apprenticeship scheme

'So far the apprenticeship has been far better than I expected – it’s like nothing else I’ve ever done. We’re learning so much every day. There is a sense of pride that goes with having the University card.'

Where are we now?

+ more

We have an award winning apprenticeship scheme made up of nine apprentices. Our apprentices were not the first to join the Estates Services department but it was the first time an apprenticeship scheme within the University had been developed with a local College. It required senior members of our team to create course content and deliver all training and assessment

We were pleased to have won the ‘University Apprenticeships Manager’s award’ for an outstanding contribution to the Apprenticeships Scheme and win project initiative of the year for the Estates Staff Awards 2017.

What did we do?

+ more

We took in the largest cohort of apprentices within a single team in the University and we underwent rigorous training to become NVQ Assessors. Abingdon & Witney College are the accredited assessment centre. Our apprentices are progressing towards a City and Guilds NVQ Level 2 in Facilities Services and Principles.

To ensure easy integration with our existing team we created a three way intensive FM ‘boot camp’ which covered many training aspects including Customer Service, Working in a team and Health and Safety. Our apprentices have taken these skills into our buildings and benefit from a rolling programme of training and development.

Why did we do it?

+ more

FM is a growing team and apprenticeships enable us to expand while keeping staff costs down. Our hope is that many of the apprentices will take up permanent roles in our team which makes hiring reliable, simple and cost effective.

The apprenticeship scheme has bought flexibility for current staff’s time as they have been freed up to do other things. Their enthusiasm is infectious and brought in new energy across the team.
