Background to the contract

Following a comprehensive and robust tender process, with extensive consultation and collaboration with a number of departments, the University has appointed a new supplier to work in partnership with the University to provide catering services in its cafes and restaurants and for hospitality and events.

The ten-year contract, which has been awarded to Compass Group, will be managed by the Estates Services Facilities Management (FM) team and University Purchasing team and provides an exciting opportunity to deliver significant service, sustainability, financial, and compliance benefits. It will also provide departments that use the service with a catering offering that has a consistent identity and character reflecting the first class quality synonymous with the University, whilst enabling them to tailor the service to suit their own particular requirements.

A key objective has been to deliver value for money by moving away from the previous use of multiple contracts which have offered varying standards of service and food quality and created higher overall management and operational costs which were difficult to capture – we estimate that the catering subsidies together with the additional costs of space, utilities and equipment were costing the University in the region of - £500k per annum.

Who has adopted the new contract?

23 sites across the University are adopting the new contract which will commence roll-out autumn 2017 with the introduction of three bespoke branded themes – Beyond Ordinary Food for cafes and restaurants, Occasions at Oxford for working lunches and events and Only at Oxford for VIP fine dining.
