Asbestos Management

Asbestos is a Corporate University matter and is subject to University Policy Statement S2/14.

Estates Services is responsible for the management of asbestos in the building fabric of the University functional estate. Estates Services keep, maintain and update an asbestos register documenting the known asbestos containing materials (ACMs) for each building, based on information received from asbestos surveys and the annual re-inspection programme.

There is a programme of work underway to carry out new asbestos management surveys in all buildings of the functional estate constructed before the year 2000, and to update and issue new asbestos management plans for each of those buildings. More information on this programme and requirements on Department staff plese read the following memo to departments (25kb) .

Any planned or reactive work that may disturb or alter building fabric or services must have suitable and sufficient asbestos information available to ensure that asbestos materials will not inadvertently be disturbed. This will usually take the form of a targeted pre-refurbishment survey undertaken by Estates Services contracted asbestos consultant, but the Estates Services Compliance Team can also undertake checks for minor or reactive works. See the survey guidance, process and request forms for further details or contact the Compliance Team at

Any work on, or removal of, asbestos materials on the University Estate must be carried out by licensed asbestos contractors and must be arranged through the Estates Services Compliance Team. See the process chart for further details including likely timescales.

Where the presence of asbestos is known, suspected, discovered, or can be reasonably assumed, compliance with University Safety Policy S2/14 is compulsory. This applies to any person engaged in the project, whether contractor, consultant or member of staff.
