Senior Appointments Panel (SAP)

The SAP consists of the Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (People and GLAM), the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation). It advises the Vice-Chancellor on:

  • the ad hoc conferment of titles of distinction;
  • super-scale payments to Associate Professors for recruitment and retention purposes;
  • additional payments to substantive readers and professors for retention purposes;
  • the creation, grading and salaries for senior administrative posts (ALC6) and senior research posts (RSIV) and the appointment of individuals to such posts without advertisement.

The Head of Reward is Secretary to the SAP, and should always receive cases via the relevant divisional office under a cover letter from the Head of Division. SAP cases are dealt with off system and departments should therefore not raise a staff request until informed to do so by the division. The SAP meets monthly to consider cases, very pressing cases may be considered by correspondence.

When considering cases the SAP takes account of internal comparabilities, and evidence should always be provided to show that any proposed salary would not lead to unacceptable salary anomalies. Further information on the procedures can be found in the guidance on SAP Procedures.

Committee to Review the Salaries of Senior University Officers (CRSSUO)

The Committee to Review the Salaries of Senior University Officers (CRSSUO) consists of three external members (two are external members of Council), one of whom is chair; one of the Proctors or the Assessor (as may be agreed between them); and three other members, who may be internal or external. At all times, the Committee will be comprised of primarily lay members. Current membership is listed here.

The CRSSUO is responsible for setting and reviewing the remuneration of the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Heads of Division, and Director of Finance. In carrying out its duties the CRSSUO adheres to the University’s Remuneration Policy for Senior University Officers which complies with the Committee of University Chairs Higher Education Senior Staff Remuneration Code. The Remuneration Policy for Senior University Officers will be reviewed every two years.
