If you have been offered a voluntary redundancy payment (ie the enhanced redundancy payment available through the VRS or redundancy procedure, but NOT a normal end of fixed term contract) you are eligible to be considered for any post advertised below for which you are suitably qualified: this will normally mean that the post will be at the same grade as your current post, and where your skills and experience match the requirements of the post.

Example posting:  G4 Finance Assistant (60% FTE)

This is a varied part-time (60% FTE) finance role in a small departmental administration team in central Oxford.  Duties will include processing invoices, purchase orders, expense claims and payroll paperwork. 

Key selection criteria:

  • Experience of using Oracle and Core
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Good communication and team working skills
  • Willing to take on other duties suitable to the grade

G8 Technical IT Team Leader (80%FTE)       

This post leads small team of software developers in central Oxford who support and maintain, mostly web based, applications written in a variety of open-source languages. The team works with Linux and OSX machines connecting to mainly Debian servers.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Proven experience in at least one of the following areas:
    • Web development
    • Online application and database development
    • Server technologies
    • Data and text manipulation
  • Experience of leading technical projects

 G3 Laboratory Support Technician (80%FTE):  Glassware Preparation & Bio-Waste

This post supports the research activity of a large department in central Oxford by provision of clean glassware and disposables, such as pipette tips and microfuge tubes, and sterilization needs. 

Selection criteria include but are not limited to:

  • educated to GCSE or equivalent;
  • good communication/interpersonal skills;
  • ability to follow protocols consistently and accurately;
  • ability to undertake tasks requiring dexterity, regular manual handling and operating scientific equipment;
  • flexible “can do” approach, ability to work co-operatively with others;
  • basic computer use.

G3 Common Room Manager (Full-time)

The Common Room manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of a Common Room in a large department in central Oxford providing hot and cold refreshments for staff and students as well as in-house catering for meetings and events.  The post holder ensures the facility opens on time each day; decides menus and orders stock; provides event catering; and supervises the Common Room Assistant and temporary staff.

Selection criteria include but are not limited to:

  • Food Hygiene certificate
  • Experience of food preparation and storage protocols in catering industry
  • Basic knowledge of applicable Health and Safety protocols
  • A flexible approach to work; cheery and enthusiastic manner
  • Basic understanding of accounts and stock control

G6 Academic Administrator (Full-time)

This post coordinates academic administration for the Faculty, overseeing all administrative processes for undergraduate and graduate matters. The role holder supervises two members of staff and undertakes particular duties relating to undergraduate matters.

  • Significant experience of working in academic administration.
  • Demonstrable ability and willingness to propose and implement improvements to processes.
  • The ability to provide guidance to more junior colleagues, supporting workload prioritisation as necessary.

G5 Teaching laboratory assistant (Part-time 85% FTE)

This post is the senior technician in the teaching lab.  The role holder responsible for the planning, organization, scheduling and implementation of the department’s laboratory teaching commitments, including the provision of teaching to other departments.  They also have a significant input into the design of experiments led by academic staff, and ensures that experiments are carried out safely.  The role holder will also prepare and manage exhibits and demonstrations during open days and support the department’s outreach programme.

Selection criteria include but are not limited to:

  • HNC or equivalent in a physical science or engineering related subject.
  •  Extensive experience of working in a laboratory, including the safe use of chemicals.
  •  Demonstrable experience in the construction, maintenance and operation of specialised equipment.
  •  Excellent communication skills and enthusiasm to work with young people.
  •  Self-motivated, proactive and able to work independently.

Deadlines for applications

Posts have an initial closing date three weeks after they are posted at which date all applications received to that date will be considered against the selection criteria for the post.  Suitable candidates will be called for interview.

Where no applications have been received by the initial closing date the post may, with the agreement of department and postholder, remain open and applications will be considered on an ad hoc basis, as received.
