Contractors may be appointed by the principal contractor or by the client. They must:

 (a)           not carry out work unless satisfied that the client is aware of their duties under the Regulations

 (b)           be competent, and employ competent people, to carry out the work

 (c)           plan, manage, and monitor the construction work under their control to ensure that it is carried out without risks to health and safety

 (d)          cooperate with other contractors and the principal contractor so as to coordinate their work activities

 (e)           provide suitable information, training and site induction for their workers

 (f)            where they are the sole contractor on the project: prepare a construction phase plan and ensure the site is suitably secured against unauthorised entry.
