Course Details

In accordance with University Safety Policy S1/00, 'Working Safely with Electricity', portable electrical appliances must be regularly inspected for safety and many must also be tested. Departments may use external contractors to test their appliances or they may manage a testing programme 'in house'. However, employees who carry out electrical safety inspections and tests should be trained formally and be competent to do so.

The Safety Office offers training in Portable Appliance Testing (PAT). The course will consider the legal requirements of working with electricity, and some basic theoretical work, but the main focus will be to provide practical 'hands on' experience of using testing equipment and a sound understanding of the types of appliance that require testing and how to go about it. Previous knowledge or experience of electricity is not a prerequisite and those without technical experience may complete the course successfully.

Trainees are required to bring with them the portable appliance tester that they propose to use in their testing programme. The Safety Office also has two Portable Appliance Checkers which it loans to departments on request and these will be available for use during the session.
